Gaza, ALRAY - The Union of Agricultural Work Committees (UAWC) has documented 320 violations committed by the Israeli occupation navy against Palestinian fishermen over the past year.
In a press statement issued Tuesday, the Gaza-based organization pointed out that the Israeli occupation navy used heavy machine guns, shells, or water cannon to chase Palestinian fishing boats and restrict their access off the coast of the besieged Gaza Strip.
The Union warned against the dramatic surge in Israeli assaults against Palestinian fishermen in 2020, which increased by 63 attacks, compared with 2019.
During 2020, the Israeli occupation navy shot and wounded 18 Palestinian fishermen and detained nine others in harsh conditions, according to testimonies given by some of them after their release.
The Israeli occupation navy, in addition, has damaged 12 boats, some of which completely while others partially, and stole four others along with their equipment, in addition to destroying and confiscating hundreds of fishing nets.
As for the permitted fishing zone off the coast of the blockaded Gaza Strip, the Israeli occupation authorities reduced and extended it several times over the past year.
The Union documented 10 Israeli decisions in this regard, foremost among them is the closure of Gaza’s fishing zone for 16 days in a row in the second half of August 2020.
