Jerusalem, ALRAY - Human Rights Watch has called on the Israeli occupation to "immediately" release Palestinian-French human rights defender Salah Hamouri who is being held under administrative detention without charge or trial.

In a press statement Tuesday, the international human rights group also urged the Israeli occupation to reverse its decision to revoke Hamouri's residency status in his native Jerusalem.

The Israeli occupation has been holding Hamouri since 7 March 2022 under administrative detention without charge or trial, based only on "secret evidence."

Hamouri is a lawyer who works for the Palestinian prisoner rights group Addameer which the Israeli occupation authorities labelled as a "terrorist organization" last year, along with five Palestinian civil society and rights groups.

On 17 October 2021, the Israeli occupation ministry of interior revoked Hamouri's residency status under the pretext of “breach[ing] allegiance” to the Israeli occupation, in a move that could see him expelled from occupied Jerusalem.

"International humanitarian law expressly forbids an occupying power from compelling people under occupation to pledge loyalty to it," HRW pointed out.
