Sydney, ALRAY - Australia on Tuesday announced it reversed a decision by its previous government to recognize occupied Jerusalem as the capital of ‘Israel’.
Australian Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong said that Australia is committed to a two-state solution in which ‘Israel’ and a future Palestinian state coexist in peace within internationally recognized borders.
She added that Australia will not support an approach that undermines this prospect, reiterating that Australia’s embassy would remain in Tel Aviv.
The minister confirmed that Jerusalem is a final status that must be resolved in peace negotiations between ‘Israel’ and the Palestinian people.
In December 2018, Australian previous Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced that his conservative government would recognize occupied Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, which resulted in Australia’s shifting position towards the middle East.
