Cairo, ALRAY - The Arab Parliament on Tuesday praised Australia’s decision to drop its recognition of occupied Jerusalem as ‘Israel’s capital’.

The parliament said that the decision is in line with international law and resolutions of international legitimacy, which would enhance opportunities for peace, achieve security and stability in the region, and emphasize the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital.

The Arab Parliament called on the Australian government to recognise the State of Palestine, with Jerusalem as its capital.

Earlier on Tuesday, Australia announced it reversed a decision by its previous government to recognize occupied Jerusalem as the capital of ‘Israel’.

Australian Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong said that Australia is committed to a two-state solution in which ‘Israel’ and a future Palestinian state coexist in peace within internationally recognized borders.

She added that Australia will not support an approach that undermines this prospect, reiterating that Australia’s embassy would remain in Tel Aviv.

The minister confirmed that Jerusalem is a final status that must be resolved in peace negotiations between ‘Israel’ and the Palestinian people.
