Gaza, ALRAY - Israeli occupation forces committed at least 62 violations against Palestinian journalists in January 2023, Government Media Office (GMO) said on Wednesday.


In its report for January, the GMO’s Monitoring and Follow-up Unit said that it documented 54 Israeli violations against Palestinian journalism, in addition to 8 internal violations that took place in occupied West Bank.


The unit pointed out that 9 journalists were either detained, held, or got their custody extended by Israeli occupation forces, indicating that the detention of the journalists Yasseen Abu Lafah and Nidal Abu Aker was extended for six months.


In addition, the unit said that the Israeli occupation forces and settlers attacked at least 11 journalists during their coverage of the Palestinian marches and events.


According to the unit, the attacks varied from rubber bullets and tear gas shooting, and verbal and physical assaults to car-ramming attempts.


Moreover, the unit went on, the Israeli occupation forces and extremist settlers prevented 19 journalists from performing their duties of covering the Israeli crimes and violations against Palestinian people.


Also, the GMO’s Monitoring and Follow-up Unit documented at least 2 cases of storming and raiding a journalist’s house and one case of seizing over a mobile phone.


As for combating digital Palestinian content, the unit recorded over 4 violations committed by Israeli occupation forces in collaboration with social media giants including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, on the pretext of "violating their community guidelines."


Furthermore, the unit said that the occupation court rejected the appeal submitted by detained journalist Omar Abu al-Rab, who received a six-month administrative detention order and spent about 2 years in prison.
