The Arab League launched yesterday an international campaign in support of Samer Al-Issawi and other Palestinian hunger strikers, directly appealing to international and human rights institutions.

Nabil Elaraby, Secretary-General of the Arab League, sent a letter to Secretary-General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon, and Navi Pillay, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, calling on them to exert the utmost pressure on Israel for the release of hunger-striking Palestinian detainee Samer Al-Issawi and his colleagues.

Muhammad Sabih, Assistant Secretary-General of the Arab League for Affairs of Palestine and the Occupied Arab territories, sent  statement about the Palestinian detainee's conditions  to Arab and Western countries, Arab league delegations, human right committees and media.

"The Arab League takes the Palestinian detainee's issues and their hunger strike seriously," Sabih said.

The Arab league holds Israel responsible for the lives of all Palestinian prisoners on hunger-strike, Samer Al-Issawi and his colleagues, and demands their immediate release.”

The statement of the Arab league noted that Samer Al- Issawi's health condition has seriously deteriorated, and is now life-threatening. It called on Israel to adhere to the norms of international law and to the Fourth Geneva Convention in its treatment of of Palestinian detainees ".

On Tuesday an Israeli Magistrate's Court in Jerusalem refused to release Al-Issawi.
